If you want to know more about the relationship between the PROBABILITIES=
of a random mating population and the POSSIBILITIES within a selected
breeding program -- for example, to explore whatever relationship might
exist between floriferousness and disease resistance -- find a text on
Population Genetics and look up the Hardy -Weinberg Equilibrium. This i=
s
a lot more complex than the probabilities associated with the Punnett
square, so I won't even try to explain the math behind it here.
As we've said before, you don't have to have an in-depth understanding of=
genetics to have a lot of fun and a significant amount of success in
hybridizing. It all depends on your goals -- but if you want to push the=
bounds of possibilities, an understanding of population genetics and
genetic statistics will serve you well.
