I hope we all noted Roger's experience here, especially that line that even
though the expedited service is offered, we customers don't take it. We're
too cheap.
How often have you groused about the shipping costs added to a mail order?
I know I have, and blamed the poor businessman, too, when I should thank
him for taking the trouble to make available a higher level of service.
My brother wrote the tracking program used by Federal Express (a great
shipping service I cannot bring myself to pay for even when I send him
things!). I know how long it took him to work out the bugs, how long he had
to be away from his family for switching problems and education sessions
here and there and what those journeys cost him in stamina, humor and
sleep; and I know that FedEx pays him and the rest of that staff. Expedited
service and tracking are expensive for good reason; real people bust their
backs bringing them to us. If we want them we should be willing to pay.

Perhaps all the conveniences we take for granted make us unrealistic about
what exactly it takes to move physical matter across a continent. Our words
may ride on radio waves and zip along through fiber optic cables, but
physical matter (like plants) must still cross that distance physically.
There is no microwave for corporeal travel. Remember the months it once
took people to travel from Virginia to California? How then can we complain
about a service that takes four days?

Before we blame the grower for sending tired rhizomes, we should ask
ourselves if we paid for the fastest delivery he offered.
