Time to eat crow - the proper dish for one who is so sure of himself that
he shoots his mouth off without verifying the facts. As I am digging and
dividing iris, AFTER sending my last post I dipped my pH meter in the
Clorox solution I use to soak the rhizomes in - the needle promptly went
off the scale on the ACID side! The dictionary confirms that chlorites are
salts of chlorous acid.
Don't know how I got the fixed idea that bleach was alkaline - maybe I got
it confused with borax.
My sincere apologies to those whose accurate knowledge I impugned in my
ignorance.
