Rima.... when you count your blessings tonight... count the fact that we
don't get moles! Sure, we have irisborer.... and snow... but we don't have
moles and for that I'm eternally grateful! I remember visiting my sister in
California and we stayed at a very cool house way up on a hill overlooking
Bodega Bay - and we hung out in a hot tub that night (might have been some
wine involved). ANYWAY.... I was absolutely HORRIFIED to watch the ground
shimmer and heave as all kinds of moles tunneled boldly around! They are the
stuff of cartoons that make those raised tunnels. An AMAZING sight I will
never forget. My sister tells me that you can't plant most bulbs because the
critters just tunnel up to them and haul them down into their tunnels.

The holes you see are probably moles. And... since I don't have THAT problem
either (except in the winter) the only advice I have is stuff I've read. The
cruelest... and therefore most enduring image... is the technique whereby you
locate the mole run.... dig into it and beneath it.... you place a coffee can
1/2 filled with water beneath the run so that the lip of the can is level
with the floor of the tunnel... and cover the mess up again. The idea is
that the mole will fall into the can and drown.
