Hey Bob,
This may have already tried this but........how
about trying a digging fork. After watching
someone else use a pitch fork to dig up a few
clumps, I knew I had to have one. I tried it out
this weekend and it was so much better than
using a shovel (like I used to do) - especially in
our clay soil. And I didn't loose a single
rhizome!
