For those that are interested I am reposting the original message that appeared
on the Iris List in June 1997 regarding the formation of the new Tall Bearded
Iris Society. It appears below. The original posting was from Julie Allen of
Sparta, TN. I was surprised at the time that it did not seem to generate much
list traffic...
Chris.

The following letter from Phil Williams of Eagleville, TN has been sent out
to a number of AIS members concerning the formation of a new Tall Bearded
Iris Society. A letter will soon be going out to more people. Since Phil
is not on the Internet, he gave me permission to post the letter on Iris-l.
Dear Friends,
This letter is in response to the initial mailout to persons announcing the
meeting to organize a society for Tall Bearded Iris that was held in
Oklahoma City on May 3 (1997). It was voted without dissent to organize! I
am writing to you because you have expressed an interest in being a charter
member.
A committee of volunteers will be meeting later this summer to complete a
plan and working constitution for our organization. Every member will be
notified and invited to also attend this meeting. A bank account has been
opened for the Tall Bearded Iris Society and a post office box has been
rented for business correspondence.
Our first publication will no doubt be a modest one, mailed to all members,
with the proposed bylaws. We want to vote on these documents at our spring
meeting.
We have established criteria for charter membership. Membership will be per
household (mailing address). Charter membership can be instituted until
January 1, 1998; any donation to help us take flight will be gratefully
appreciated. Sustaining charter memberships are $15.00; regular charter
membrships are $5.00. Both expire on June 30, 1998.
As with any young organization, we charter members are basically the
"investors" in this new enterprise. We hope to begin publishing a top notch
publicaton all about Tall Bearded Iris in 1998. We hope you will encourage
others to come on board!
Please accept my personal thanks for your kind letters and phone calls about
this new endeavor. Our mailing address for membership applicaton is:
Tall Bearded Iris Society, P O. Box # 555, Pawnee, OK 74058.
I will be looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Phil
I talked to Phil about this new Tall Bearded Society, and he stressed that
the intention is not to compete with AIS or to take over any of the
functions of AIS, such as awards. Rather he sees it as an organization in
which people interested in TBs can get together, have fun, and learn. It is
true that one does not have to be a member of AIS to join this society, but
that is also true of the Louisiana and Aril Societies. Of course most
members will also be members of AIS.
The post office box, membership applications, and dues are being handled by
Ron Mullin, who as you know is a former president of the American Iris
Society. Ron has been fully bonded for this purpose.
I personally belong to AIS, the Society for Louisiana Iris, and several
sections of AIS: Reblooming Iris Society, Japanese Iris Society, Median Iris
Society. I have now joined the Tall Bearded Iris Society. I think there is
room in the iris world for this society, and I think it will enrich our
opportunities to enjoy, appreciate, and learn more about growing Tall
Bearded Iris.
