Keep an eye on the other fans of this clump and let me know it starts
happening to them. It could be that some insect or animal chewed on it
and then it began to rot a little. However it could be the start of a
fungus and then you will have to take certain measures. But one step at
a time.

I would suspect that you are just taking good care of them, watering
them well and they are responding to this by growing large. Should put
on a good show next year. If these were rebloomers they would be
blooming now.

Well, if they are not causing any damage I would not worry about them.
If on the other hand you do notice damage then you should get them
identified. Take a sample to your County Agriculture Agent and ask them
to identify them and suggest a control method.

Zone 9/Ca is good, but when asking cultural questions it would help to
be a little more specific since CA has such diverse climatic zones; such
as Coastal CA near San Luis Obispo or Mendicino in Northern CA...etc.
