Dennis, have had similar experiences and, in most cases, if the seeds have
matured sufficiently, they will germinate.  I usually just treated them like
all other seed keeping them in paper cups in a dry spot until the first frost,
then planting them in a pot of potting soil about 1/2"-1" deep.  I set the
pots outside and forget them until spring (since I'm in Florida).  I
personally feel you'll get germination.
