Hello, David, and welcome to Iris-talk! I am sure that you will find the
iris discussions here enjoyable and informative. It's great to have another
member of the Logan Iris Society on board!

As was mentioned in this forum only the other day, the Iris World is
divided into two parts. The AIS oversees the registration of rhizomatous
irises and a Dutch Bulb Grower's Association takes responsibility for the
bulbous sorts. Therefore, AIS awards are restricted to the various classes
of rhizomatous iris, although bulbous kinds can be exhibited at AIS shows
and receive show ribbons (but not Best Specimen in the Show). Not too many
people other than the commercial bulb growers seem to hybridize bulbous
irises, but that shouldn't stop anyone who's interested from trying. From
reading SIGNA, the journal of the Species Iris Group of North America, it
appears that Alan McMurtrie in Canada is pursuing a very active program of
hybridizing the dwarf bulbous irises of the reticulata type.
