Mark, the fact that we both have Belemcanda chinensis blooming at the
same time may not be so strange. Despite severe and long winters, our
two climates in the summer are quite similar. We suffer quite a lot of
hot humid weather that comes to us from the Mississippi Valley area.
Luckily for us it is the tail end of those weather disturbances so that
tornados, the very high humidity, and the very serious storms are very
unusual this far north. These very unpleasant conditions usually fade
out somwhere in Southern Ontario. On very rare occasions we have had a
tornado. Lois Addison, who runs a small nursery outside Ottawa,
recently listed on alpine-l their temperature range as approximately
-40F to +110F in exposed locations!
