I would:

Clean up around the plant.

Cut back the leaves and rhizome til I got to good clean plant material.

Drench with a 10%-20% solution of clorox. 

Dust with Agricultural Gypsum (it has 16% sulphur in it) or with something
like Bon Ami (or some other bleaching sink cleanser). I like the gypsum
because the sulphur lasts longer than the bleaching agents in the cleanser. 

Leave the cut exposed to the air so it can dry and heal over.
