<< I have dug my plant of EVOLUTION this week. It is a large, vigorous
plant,
with very dark purple-based foliage. Is this appropriate for a Cayeux iris
from the
30's? I didn't take a picture, but my recollection is that it was a smokey
purple. I read that it should be yellow. Should EVOLUTION have purple based
foliage? >>
EVOLUTION (Cayeux "29) is a "yellow blend" iris and does have purple based
foliage. As I grow it, the PBF is not as distinct as, say, PRESIDENT
PILKINGTON (Cayeux '31) which it resembles. The Cayeux Chronicle describes
EVOLUTION thus: "Standards warm coppery bronze, F. spreading well marked with
large central zone of rosey blue or pigeon's throat." I'd have said a bright
golden mustard with a large blue violet blaze. It is not a very vigorous
grower for me.
The presence of PBF is more significant as a differentiating characteristic
than the absence since it does not invariably show in all growing conditions.
For a list of historic irises which are known to have the genetic disposition
to sho PBF see the article "I.D. Groundwork" written by HIPS ID Chairman
Philip Edinger as published in ROOTS, Vol Issue 1, Spring '92. Otrher
notable Cayeux irises with this disposition include MME HENRI CAYEUX (1924)
and ALICE HARDING (1933).
Back issues of ROOTS and the HIPS Chronicles are available from HIPS
Publications Chairman Ruth Simmons and ordering informtion will be found on
the HIPS webpage at http://www.worldiris.com/.
We hope this helps.
