Scorch is a problem that shows as 'burned' or excessively brown foliage that
seems to die back rapidly. Rhizomes and roots typically appear more or less
healthy, though roots can be less abundant than optimal, making it tough to
discern the cause of the foliage problem. Also it seems to affect one or a very
few plants in the garden. I am not familiar with scorch so much in bearded iris
as I am in beardless, specifically sib and japs. You didn't specify which
rhizomes are shriveling, which may be helpful with diagnosis. Bloom stalk
supporting rhizomes begin to decompose if they are not supporting a maturing
seed
pod fairly rapidly. I can't say I can ell you what the problem is, but if the
foliage is at a comparable stage of die-back in all of your iris, it probably
isn't scorch.
