Re: HYB: aphylla

Hi Sterling,
In response to your inquiry regarding crosses with aphylla derivitives
and tall bearded iris:

You will probably get the same germination as you would when crossing
two TB's. You are dealing with the same number of chromosomes.

You will not be getting a bunch of "dogs" unless you choose to cross the
aphylla derivitives to tall bearded "dogs".

It took many many generations of aphylla x TB crosses to obtain these
well proportioned iris that Ben Hager and Jim and I have been
introducing to the market. They are quite stable now and I assure you
that we get few that could be called "dogs" when crossing to TB's.

So, Sterling, if you have chosen TB's that have great form, substance,
et. al. you will find some lovely seedlings in your iris patch.

PAYOFF and RAVE REVIEW are both excellent parents, I hope you are using
them.

What you will find is a greater variation in the height of the
bloomstalks and the size of the flowers. If you choose Tb's with smaller
blooms and 28" to 30" stalks your chances are greater that you will get
smaller seedlings. If you crossed to a 40" tall TB with huge blooms you
will probably get taller seedlings with larger blooms.

As a footnote: Lloyd, Your info re: aphylla species basicly is correct.
The first two or three generations are not much to look at however
Sterling's question concerns the modern derivitives of aphylla species x
TB. There is a huge difference.
