Hello again,
I'll try to answer your inquiry to the best of my ability. I truly do
not know if or how well they will grow in your climate. I am offering
the seed for only the cost of postage. They are smaller than TB seed and
will no doubt take a $.32 stamp.
They are much like the arils in that they do well with a dry summer
season. They receive very little natural rainfall in July, August and
September. Showers usually begin in late September in most of their
native habitat. They flourish for us in light shade or with shade from
mid to late morning on in the summer. They like acid soil mulched with
pine needles and they thrive beneath a large oak tree in our front yard.
They would probably do well if mulched with bark dust. In our yard they
flourish with an Eastern exposure. If you grow them in a climate that is
very cold in winter you will need to mulch them heavily.
Marky Smith had one very nice PCN in bloom in her garden during the
median tour this spring in Yakima, Washington. I know they have snow in
winter and some very cold temperatures.
They do not transplant well, so it is best to set out seedlings early in
the area you wish to grow them. They form a beautiful compact plant that
increases in size each year. I remember George Shoop's comment when he
showed us this large planting he had and then took us to another spot in
his yard where he transplanted. He said the secret of moving them is to
take a portion of the established plant, roots, dirt and all and then
move it to a new location immediately. Don't let it sit out exposed to
the air and sun as you do with bearded iris.
Place them where they can be protected from water in the summer months
and give them a try. You could probably grow them in a twelve inch pot
for three years, maybe more. Will send more information to those who
request seed.
Thanks to all that have responded to my offer.
Vicki
