There was a thread on alfalfa last winter, and as I recall nearly all alfalfa is
a 
perennial. The only problem I forsee is if there are seedheads in the alfalfa 
straight from the field.  A few list-ers  from that thread said that it was
nearly 
impossible to kill  an established plant, and the roots were very deep.  Not 
something that you would want growing among the irises!
