Thanks for the description of scorch............I don't think that is what I
have since the leaves and babies are healthy and just the mother rhizome is
wilting. 

I now believe it is just the natural dying of the mother rhizome.  (Thanks to
whoever told me that.)  I haven't noticed it before but it could be the extra
hot weather we are having making the difference.
