I have placed irises around our yard that only get morning sun and afternoon
shade and they have done nicely.    You might want to just try a couple
varieties and see how they do.  I think the little SDB's are a little more
tolerant of the weather and sun requirements.  I have  also heard, that if
one lives in a very warm climate, afternoon shade is better for irises.
