From coversation with Robert Hollingworth in Denver I am of the impression
that scorch is most likely a soil viris problem.  RH has moved his beardless
iris to another location to avoid some problems and perhaps to give the soil a
break from iris. If one certain plant has grown in a location for a long time,
the soil can become depleated, sick- any number of things. This not always
true, but if you observe a problem, it might be judisious to change something.
Have you talked to your county extension  agent. There just might be some
ideas from him Or Her) which will be most benifial to you in your area . Give
that a try- your taxes support the4 extension so why not give it a try.
