Winters down-under.

At least some of us are not going to sympathize with you over your
"dull" and "dragging" winters! Come and visit us this winter, anytime
between January and March would be ideal. We have a two week holiday
called Winterlude where all the activities are outside - if you last an
hour without pleading to go inside, I will be surprised. I can guarantee
that you will return to Australia and love winter forever!

We have made two extensive trips to Australia (15,000km driving) and
specifically choose your winters because the weather is so lovely. Your
national Rhododendron garden, in the hill NE of Melbourne, is one of the
most beautiful sights that I have experienced anywhere in the world and
that was in July. We arrived there almost by chance whilst wandering
through the hill country. The outside was so un-preposessing that we
nearly decided to drive away but, having come so far, we went in. One
starts with a stunning display with flowers from every bush in flower in
the garden on display in bottles in the entrance hall. We admired the
flowers and then spent four hours seeking out the different plants in
the park-like gardens. I would recommend anyone passing through
Melbourne takes the day to drive up there and see the display.
I might also note that we saw lots of Dietes flowering in Sydney and
Perth during July and a few Pattesonia, the local wild iris, had just
begun flowering in some areas.

Oh for winters like that!

Ian, in warm and sunny Ottawa
