Well, I'm not sure what you mean by an attrition list. It sounds like
you're asking "how do you decide which cultivars you want to discard from
the garden?" Fortunately I've not had to make that decision yet. I've
only been gardening for about 18 months now.
I have been keeping track of which ones are rot prone, which ones bloom
(and how many blooms they produce, and do they rebloom, etc). I have also
kept track of which ones the aphids find tastiest. I keep all this good
info in a garden journal (notebook). If someday I must eliminate something
from my garden, it will be those that were hardest to grow, or those that
look the ugliest.
What is ugly? Tough question! It's easier to say what I like. I like
black flowers. I like velvety and iridescent flowers. I like vibrant
colors. Pastels are okay, but bright shocking neon electric colors are
much more to my taste.
I have a large patch of unknown irises (they are all the same cultivar). I
envision myself one day removing all but two or three rhizomes when it's
time to split them up. They are not particularly stunning, but they were
the first irises that I was ever given, and so they have sentimental value.
I prefer to have a little bit of everything than a mass planting of just a
few cultivars.
As a wannabe hybridizer, I could also see myself someday throwing out
infertile cultivars to make room for ones that can contribute to a
hybridization program. I would also sooner throw out a once-bloomer in
favor of keeping a rebloomer since I'm getting more bang-for-the-buck with
the rebloomer.
Just my two cents worth!
