Re: LA irises

Dennis,

I don't recall seeing a count of tet Louisiana irises, but I would guess
that there are no more than three dozen. I am sure someone keeps up with
that, but I am not sure who to ask. Ken Durio would know. I have seen a
picture of Ken's cross, and I may have taken one several years back. I
will have to take a look. It would be a slide, however, and I am not yet
set up to scan slides. Soon, however.

Good progress is being made with the tets, I think. There have finally
been color breaks. The originals resulted from chemical treatment by Joe
Mertzweiller. They were a violet-purple and tended to produced more of the
same. They also produced few seed, so progress was slow. The cold
hardiness of the tets has been questioned, but perhaps that is due to the
background of the original stock. I assume that some hybrids from hardier
species are being worked into the line. This is not really my area of
interest, but there may be a long term payoff from the hard work of a few
pioneers.
