Reckon BEVERLY SILLS would've won the Dykes Medal if the name had
been ANNIE LENNOX or BARBRA STREISAND or LORETTA LYNN?
This bit about names is intriguing. Several years ago the comments in the
Stockton Iris Gardens catalog devoted more the name CODICIL than to the
iris. In fact, the choice of the hybridizers name occurred on more than
one
cultivar, e.g. "worth overlooking the esoteric name" for BERTWHISTLE; "we
love the name" for PERILS OF PAULINE; "If you are curious about the name,
you may be too young to grow it" for CURIOUS YELLOW. Now would this
last have affected Dykes voting had it been a contender, I wonder.
I recall reading in an AIS Bulletin (I think) one hybridizer's remark that
good
names were hard to come by, which implies (or is it infers?) that there are
indeed bad names. Probably true, but very subjective. Some which got my
attention or that I liked for whatever reason were"
PURGATORY (Moores '87) LUMIERE D'AUTOMNE (Besse '92)
JUAN VALDEZ (Maryott '93) CHIEF HEMATITE (Gibson '83)
BLACK NITIE (Benson '62) WILD WEST (Ghio '79)
I'm not going to name any which I elicited a negative reaction. However,
If
one turns out to be a special favorite, I may feel funny telling someone
the
name.
