Loyd, Perhaps there is more of a difference in our locations than we see. I
am in western piedmont here, you are 3 hours east of me. I have no soil,
only rock! LOL. Well some areas
are clay which is as hard as a rock! I have hauled in dump truck loads of
gypsum to make rose
beds. All my beds required amendments. I have hauled in loads of sand as
well. My soil is on the acid side and so is my well water. Guess thats why
my Koi grow so big? I have several micro climates too. Annuals often come
back and I never dig up glads except to divide. Natural oak leaf mulch
which I am constantly pulling away from the iris. The back of largest iris
bed is a grove of pine trees. There is a large round holly in middle of it!
They grow fine though. I have to keep the oak leaves up and give them them
air. I feed bone meal and thats about all I do for them. I cut them back to
about 6 to 8 inches for the winter and always keep dead leaves pulled off.
I deadhead mine too , it just looks better. The bed is established enough
that weeding is a minimum. Wish all my flowers were as easy as Iris and
Daylily. Roses are another story though. I am surprised Spartan doesn't do
well for you!
