In sunny southern California I haven't gotten all my beds ready for new
iris, so I too will be potting the new Denver rhizomes. I use a mix
pretty close to the one that has been reccommented with the exception
that I will probably put in some alfalfa and some timed release 10-10-10
fertilizer. I don't get a freeze where I live and the temperatures have
been at or near 100 for about a week. Our hottest weather usually hits
the first week or two of September. Plants just do better if you can
delay putting them in the ground until after then. Especially since the
beds where the iris go are in FULL sun.
As a special note two of the convention iris that I was shipped were the
same iris. So if I want to be really nice I will donate them to our
club auction which will not be until August 22nd. It would not be a
good thing to leave them out of the ground until then. Even though in
the past I have done such stupid things and I didn't loose too many.
