In a message dated 98-07-30 23:39:14 EDT, you write:
<< On page 17 of the Spring '98 Roots, under "Call for 2000 Convention
Guests List of Desirable Varieties," under 1930-39 was Buechley Giant
(Buechley '32), which is one my mom grew that I am looking for. Does this
mention in the ROOTS mean that someone is growing it and it is likely to be
around to donate to the convention? If so, I sure would like to get a start
of it this year if it isn't too late! >>
The list published in ROOTS of "desirable varieties" for display at the dual
Year 2000 historic display plantings--the one at the Dallas AIS convention and
the one at the HIPS mini-convention in NY----- was compiled by Phil Edinger,
HIPS Variety ID Chairman. Phil has not told me exactly what factors he used to
determine which irises would be listed, but it seems reasonable to assume that
several criteria were involved.
This should not be regarded as a comprehensive list of "the most beautiful" or
the "only important" irises of the past century and a half. Aside from
anything else, some very wonderful irises were not on the published list since
they had been pledged already. Among these---- in case anyone was wondering
about the omissions----- are SWERTII, ISOLENE, QUAKER, LADY, SINDJKHA, SUSAN
BLISS, THAIS, DAUNTLESS, RAMSES, DOGROSE, PINK SATIN, WM. A. SETCHELL, RANGER,
CHIVALRY, PINNACLE, HELEN COLLINWOOD, BLUE RHYTHM, OLA KALA, SABLE NIGHT,
ARCTIC FURY......I'm sure you get the picture!
So, the list contains some old favorites, and also some irises which,
according to our most recent records, are very, very, rare. It also includes
some few things which, according to these selfsame records, are not known to
survive in this country, or, as we HIPSoisie say, things that we haven't found
yet. It is fervently hoped and dreamed that they may re-emerge in response to
the published listing to be planted and enjoyed by all at the Year 2000
Conventions.
If you are a member of HIPS----and why would you not be, best beloved, since
it is our iris heritage rah rah and only five bucks a year for heaven's
sake--PLEASE take a look at your collection and the HIPS list and see what you
could spare. Dallas Y2000--Joe Spears of Argyle coodinating--is basically
interested only in the stuff on the list, but the HIPS mini-convention in NY
is considering all offers of historics. If you have something to share, please
contact the person listed in ROOTS. If you want to use e-mail for NY contact
me privately for the address. The deadline is already here, but working with
dispatch you may yet be able to make a valuable contribution.
If you are not yet a member of HIPS and have something(s) interesting which
dates from 1970 or earlier, contact me privately and I'll talk to you about
it. Don't be shy, just send Anner a little note to this address:

Now, about BUECHLEY GIANT (E. M. Buechley of Buechley's Nurseries in Ohio,
1932). Usually pronounced Buckley Giant. As of our last published records it
was still being grown. Unless someone who is growing it sees your plea it is
almost certainly too late to get it this year since the HIPS DataBank is being
completely updated. After January 1, 1999, you should write to this office and
start the three step HIPS process for finding an iris. If I do not have a
catalog listing for it, I will then refer you on to the DataBank who,
hopefully, by that time will have someone listed who grows it and is willing
to share. If this course is unsuccessful, we will then run a notice in the
Locator column in ROOTS for you. As I have indicated before, we have been in a
period of transition with regards to the HIPS DataBank, but shortly we hope to
have enough records of members' personal iris collections to make it a fully
functioning entity.
Anyone interested in joining HIPS, or finding out more about it, may drop me a
note or visit our excellent and ever-under-interesting-construction
website--with pictures!--at http://www.worldiris.com/.
