<< And, now, on to the moisture content in those West Coast
rhizomes.........did it come from there or is it sweat when those boxes hit
the humid South and East? Are we perpetuating an old wives tale our
foreirisfathers taught us by drying them out for weeks >>
I dry them out a LOT since they are much less susceptible to being eaten by
evil crickets when they are less succulent. Crickets leave those little melon
ball scooped indentations on the surface of the rhizome--not to be confused
with borers who eat out the insides. Dry ones are less liable to have
adjustment-rot problems, too, when they are watered more frequently to get
them established. Also, somewhat less prone to being sunburned on the top of
the rhizome. Some of those whoppers are thin-skinned compared to our tough,
knotty little Mid-Atlantic Zone 6-7 rhizomes.
