If you mulch the beds with about 3/4" COARSE builder's sand, almost all
frost heave will be prevented. The sand, unlike most mulches, allows the
roots to breathe and does not encourage rot. Side benefits? The sanded
beds look attractive, the sand reduces your weeding by about 85%, and when
it is time to divide, it makes a great amendment for clay soils.
