frost heaving

     I think this is more of a problem in climates where the soil goes
through numerous freeze-thaw cycles.  In your climate, by planting now,
they should be fine.  
     When I lived in Kentucky, this problem would occur on Irises and
Daylilies that were planted after Labor Day.  Since they had not had time
to grow an adequate root system, they were more prone to heave.
