 I believe that there is a consensus that these are *good* species. (The jury is
still out on I. thompsonii, another reputed PCNI.) They ARE closely related and
hybridize readily in the wild where their ranges overlap as Vickie Jo said.  The
People who know these irises seem to be readily able to recognize the hybirds
from the species.  There are differences in range, habitat and cultural
requirements that support multiple species.  Just how many might depend on your
definition of *species*.
