OT what's in a name

From: Dianne Dalla Santa <dalla@apollo.ruralnet.net.au>

There has been a fair bit of comment on names of late. On ocassion I buy
for the name rather than the colour. One of my favourite TB's now long gone
was Harlem Hussy. I purchased her a friend in Sultry Sister but HH didn't
stick around long after that. Many years ago No 1 son chose Skylab because
pieces of it were falling back to earth over Western Australia about the
time of his 13th birthday. Another, No 2 chose Neutron Dance. He was right
into breakdancing and glitter gel at the time. The youngest, No 5, chose
Town Clown. I've forgotten exactly what No's 3 and 4 chose but they always
selected names that appealed to them and I got stuck with the plant. But
then I have also had some fun times with names. Friends of ours that went
camping in the Kulkyne Forest over the Easter break regularly with us had 3
little boys. The pressure was always on this couple,( usually after a long
night around the campfire and a few nightcaps) to try for a Kulkyne baby.
No deal... tent walls are thin. She worked at a bank, he at the local Post
office. She had a RDO (rostered day off... workers used to get an RDO once
a month for a 38 hour week) and cooked a roast for lunch. He rarely went
home for lunch but did this particular day. The roast went cold and I'm
sure have already guessed where this is heading. Yep, a dear little baby
girl duly arrived. Now I had the perfect irises for these two friends. He,
Lunchtime Lover and she Brazen Lover. We laughed a lot over that episode. I
still grow both of these. Oh and it doesn't stop at irises. Just yesterday
I planted the rose Tipsy Imperial Concubine. I just loved then name and
tried to fathom out the story (if there is one) behind the naming of that
particular rose. My friends also have a warped sense of humour as I had to
buy one each for them as well. When I'm out there amongst the weeds...I
mean irises..I often think that I could write a litle essay using names of
lots of the irises I have. Think about that.. I'm sure you could too.
