Cult: Trimming Roots/Aggressive Growth

From: "Steven & Sharlyn Rocha" <srocha@pacbell.net>

Hello Everyone,
I am convinced that trimming roots is the only way to plant irises. They
seem to get a faster start this way.
I am sure you all know that the roots on your new rhizomes all die and
new roots take their place. When you remove these old roots, you allow the
new roots room to grow and immediately contact the soil. There is no danger
of air pockets drying the rhizomes. How can you get dirt up to the base of
a rhizome with all those old roots in the way?
If you live in a windy climate and need the old roots to anchor the
rhizome into place, I can understand that. Otherwise, I feel everyone should
at least try this method with some of their irises this year. It worked for
a queen of show this year.
