Saving a podded stalk in a vase of water may work in colder
climates, but that procedure induces rot here. The pod still needs
sunshine and the water in a vase can warm and almost cook the
stalk.
I have had success by dipping the stalk in clorox or comet and
sticking that stalk in a dry spot in a flower bed so I can watch it.
Rot may still form at the base and you may have to trim some of
stalk and doctor it again with a bleach product.
Dr. Zurbrigg has had success with sticking a broken stalk in a
potato. I have never tried that. I think there is a disussion of this
technique in the archives.
Of course, all of this depends on the maturity stage of the pod
when it is snapped off. Pods just forming will be lost if. The pod
must be several weeks in its development before I can save it...at
least in my garden.
What I don't understand about pod development is why a pod
falls off about two weeks after fertilization. It appears that the
cross has taken and development starts, then stops, and the pod
falls off. I think possibly it has to do with the lateness of the
season. Late bearded crosses hardly ever work for me.
