Astrophysicist George Gamow told of one almost as good.

He took his vacations at a ranch in Montana. One summer the owner bought
a new big red horse and Gamow suggested that it be named for the big red
star in Orion, Betelguese, which he pronounced something like BEHT el
goyze.

The next summer the ranch had a new owner. The horse was still there,
but its name had become Battle Goose.

of my iris season

PS Isn't etymology the study of insects? ;-)
