Ian, I agree with everything you said about spurias. You mention the need
for an article or two in magazines. This is not as easy as one might
imagine. Editors understandably tend to "ration" their space among groups
of plants--a common response to a proposal is "Oh, we just did irises six
months ago." Also I find that most of the leading magazines are strictly
limiting their space devoted to "plants" and giving more to "design". An
article about spurias would have to emphasize their garden use. That said,
it's a good idea. Articles in popular magazines generate interest. Several
years ago I wrote in FLOWER AND GARDEN about arilbreds, and ASI, I was
told, got 50 new members as a result. The next year, Schreiner's listed
arilbreds as such for the first time, including 'Sheik,' which was the lead
photo for the article.
I'd be interested in any response people note to the article on rebloomers
in the current FINE GARDENING.
