SPEC: Spurians

Anner is correct when she pointed out that Iris lactea is not a spurian
but in series Ensatae (Diels) Lawrence. I have pondered this point for
the last couple of weeks and, as a result, re-identified all my
flowering spurians. My concern is that lactea is so much like the
spurians that it is very difficult to justify separating it. I made a
simple list of the spurians and ranked them by height, leaf width and
colour. I.lactea fits right in without question.

Many of the plants distributed as lactea are spurians - I have always
assumed sintenisii. After spending a day looking at all my sitenisii, I
am now in doubts about its identification and can not find a description
in BIS which fits this plant. It certainly does not look like the
species in photographs or the lactea in photographs. Without flowers,
the two are very similar. One feature is the leaves of lactea are 5mm
but those of "sitenisii range from 2-5mm and the plants are identical in
appearance to the lactea, that is without a flower.

I should also note that the lactea flower is structually identical to
the graminea flower - suggesting a relationship.

So it goes on, doubt, doubt and more doubt!

One feature that interests me in my sitenisii is that the style
terminates in a toothed edge, not two pointed triangles - does anyone
know of a spurian-like species that is 40cm, pale blue markings on
white, pale blue standards, and a style with such an end? Any
suggestions would be welcome!
