What is the trick with keeping these things alive? They germinate fine,
but barely get 1"~2" tall before they wither away. Should they be growing
in swampy soil as babies? Right now they are in pots which I try to keep
watered, but maybe it's just not enough?
HELP!!
Dennis,
I grew mine in pots all summer in the shade with at least daily watering and
during particularly hot dry time I leave them in standing water in the
plastic flats. I planted the seedlings in the fall on the edges of my
overflow from one of my ponds. In New Mexico they grow in mountain flood
areas that have tall grass and small streams running thru them. They grow at
7000 to 8000 feet elevation. The streams dry up in June, but the monsoons
start in July and last thru August. Once they're established I try to flood
them every couple of days in the spring and weekly flooding until the
monsoons start. Winter here is very dry so they go totally dormant and I
don't water them then. I've had close to 100% success with this method.
I hope this helps.
