Hi Dennis,
A part of the problem may be the particular strain you're trying to grow.
Some are a bit more demanding than others. While I have one strain that
might take to pot culture, most won't thrive under those conditions.
Rule here is full sun. No pots.... Should be planted in *dirt*. Part of the
problem may be the potting soil. They seem to prefer a heavy soil (part
clay in their natural habitat and hard packed, rather poor dirt - not
garden soil -- here). Where I grew up in the Columbia basin they're called
the "Potholes Iris". They grow near water in the spring but it's
considerably drier in the summer and fall to the point that the soil
resembles concrete.
Best luck I've had raising these things is to seed directly in the Fall and
not messing with them unless I'm taking starts or moving them in the early
Spring.
Are you trying to raise them from seed for the experience or do you just
want some in your collection? :)
