I've been away for a few days and just caught up with all the stuff on this subject. Out in my part of Hoosierland, horseapples were what was left on the street after the parade passed by. As for hedgeapples, we had them and considered them great for throwing, but I never heard them called by a particular name. I had a wonderful archway of mock orange along one side of my corner lot in Indianapolis and it was one of my first plantings when I relocated to Virginia. The fragrance is delicious. It's a slow grower and can be pruned as you desire. I have two osage orange bows -- a 35-pound Army-issued longbow on which I learned to shoot, and a 50-pounder which I later used for hunting. The lighter bow has no arrow rest -- one simply let the shaft pass over one's gloved finger. It still has the patch of rabbit fur which I attached to silence the sound of the arrow.
