After editing like mad on the checklist database last winter, I still
don't pretend to understand the seedling codes, but Hager's usually made
sense. For FRINGE BENEFITS Sdlg. T4280LcOr, he would usually include in
the description what the codes stood for - occasionally it would refer
back to a characteristic of one of the parents. I don't have the
description from the R&I for FB in front of me, but I'll bet the height
is over 34 inches, and that <orange> and <lace> are in the description.
I remember seeing some LtBl <light blue> seedlings.
Other hybridizers were usually consistent from year to year (which
helped in deciphering scanning errors and typos in the original
checklist compilation), but some seemed to be pretty inconsistent
(mostly spacing vs hyphens, periods & placing of series numbers (as I
recall, sometimes the number or letter might be at the beginning of the
seedling number, sometimes in the middle).
Soo, future hybridizers, pick a system, make it simple, & stick to it if
you want to minimize errors in transcription in future electronic
databases <g>
