The following were garden stand-outs during the
bloom season of 2000.
Best TB's
Arctic Fox - Wood, '98 ~ Red caterpillar beards
on a starchy white flower that is budded and
branched.
Carnival Sunset - Thurman, '97 ~ Searing orange
flowers that don't burn.
Eurythmic - Blyth, '87 ~ Unbelievable pinkish,
plum blend. Stds. pink with the plum fall area
extending only half way down ending in standard
color. Not be be mistaken for another, but a
shy parent. This is the best it has ever done.
Golden Panther - Tasco, '00 ~ Bronze overlay
over golden brown. Quite an advancement in this
color class. Good grower, too.
Poem of Ecstasy - Hager, '97 ~ Soft contrast in
pink and mauve. Perfection in color and form.
Romantic Evening - Ghio, '96 ~ WOW! Lighter
bluish stds. over very dark, near black, falls
with smoldering reddish orange beards. Has a
bright future in the awards department.
Shop Talk - M. Roberts, '98 ~ Another WOW! The
blended dark violet is hard to describe. Macho
flower and stalk.
Skating Party - Gaulter, '83 ~ Classic white. A
mature clump sends up stalk after show stalk.
Breathtaking!
Stunning Serenade - Thurman, '97 ~ Such a husky
plant; the most vigorous in the garden. Leaves
are two inches wide and three feet tall.
Stunning flowers are of a burnished yellow over
purple falls. A good stalker, too. Everything
is right about this iris as it grows here.
Whoever said that modern irises are weak needs
to grow this one.
Tom Johnson - Black '96 ~ I had been afraid of
this one because of
the parentage (neither parent does well here)
and had crossed it off. Well, do I have to eat
humble pie? Yes. This is the premier dark iris
and has oh so much more vigor than Midnight Oil,
Night Game, Night Attack, etc. Shows what two
wimpy parents can do.
Orangey beard too. Four stars all the way.
Widdershins - M. Roberts '99 ~ Beautiful brown
with a quartersized white spot. Not a plicata,
this is the first brown zonal. Super!
Since this is getting long, I won't go into
detail in the other classes.
Best BB ~ Sonja's Selah ~ Ensminger '89 ~ such
conrast...Allan's masterpiece.
Best IB ~ Star Woman ~ M. Smith '98 ~ dark
violet plic
Best MTB ~ Blue Chip Stock ~ Black '98 ~ Blue bi-
tone
Best SDB ~ Cocoa Pink ~ Niswonger ~ '97 ~ THE
blue beard!
Best SA's
Margaret Inez and French Horn ~ Sutton '99
Both in shades of pink
Best LA ~ Creole Rhapsody ~ Mertzweiller '98 ~
Bicolor in white and raspberry destined to go to
the top if well distributed. Absolutely nothing
like it...interploidy.
Best Spuria ~ Sultan's Sash ~ Niswonger '90 ~
Maroon red with lighter spot.
Best Siberian ~ Deep Shade ~ Warburton '72 ~
Contrast, growth; upstages Caesar's Brother!
Best Species ~ I. fulva Wilhoit series ~ rusty
orange
Best Spec-X ~ Cast Ashore ~ Chapman '98 ~ white,
blue, yellow versi-virginica or setosa?
Outstanding! You'll hear from this one! Hard
to believe this Canadian iris likes the South.
Best JI ~ Pink Dimity ~ Reid '87 Gorgeous!
Best AB ~ Syrian Princess ~ Shockey '97 Pink
with big dark spot...3/4 Bloomed twice, early
in March and then in late April.
Best 'older' historic ~ Flutterby ` Sturtevant
'24 Yellow butterflies all over the foliage.
Best 'newer' historic ~ Cherry Jubilee ~ Wood '69
Red-bearded white by the same hand that produced
Arctic Fox.
Anxiously awaiting news on the Raspberry Awards,
the Bronx Cheer Awards, and the Bum Steer Awards
for 2000, I turn this forum over to Donald Eaves.
