Re: OT-Plants: Slugs
I finally decided to get over the notion that beer was created solely for my
personal amusement and approached it from the standpoint that my Viking
ancestors probably sacrificed something dear to guarantee success in battle.
The sacrifice included buying a slug trap from Gardner's Supply, that mail
order house whose prices are dear, but which has things so endearing I
sometimes cannot pass them up - like a pig on a swing - which bumps me in the
head everytime I walk under that tree.
It took almost a full can of beer to fill the trap, just a sip left for me,
really.
This morning I checked and found 32 slugs, ranging in size from rice grains to
handsome-sized, but also, something, probably an opossum, had dislodged the lid
and drank all the beer in one side.
That solved one of life's major mysteries. I now know that it is gardeners
putting out beer for slugs who are also contributing to the slaughter of poor,
drunken opossums on the roads. This ecology business has so many ramifications!
One thing we need to be thankful for as irisarians is that this is one plant
that does not seem to interest bunnies. I have so many bunnies here that I
cannot bring myself to shoot, but I am no longer saddened when the cat brings
one in, as he did with the third baby bunny this week last night - slipped in
the window while I was meditating on the subject of Shaquille O'Neal not ever
becoming a complete basketball player until he can shoot free throws, and left
the corpse on the bathroom floor.
Oh well, linoleum is easy to clean, and as for left over slugs and beer, just
toss them in the grass, Anner. You can't tell they are there. In Jonesborough
we have Herb Fest, then this weekend the Celtic Festival and an open weekend
next week before the big 4th of July Festival - perhaps we could attract
tourists by holding a Midsummer Slug Festival in that slot.
