RE: SPEC: I. cretensis

Thanks to your recommendation, Anner, I recognized this book on encountering
it at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg VA while attending a sheepdog trial
there a few weeks back. I tried to order it via an online source -- but
discovered that it's now out of print. So I immediately turned around and am
getting Oatlands to send me a copy. Oatlands still has about four copies
left; while this historical home and garden normally doesn't do mail order,
they have been gracious about mailing the book to me, and only charged a
minimal handling fee.

Somewhere in one of her books, all of which I just re-read so I can't tell
you which, Elizabeth Lawrence says I. unguicularis is highly prone to being
devoured in the bud stage by slugs whick lurk in the foliage bases.

Elizabeth Lawrence of North Carolina, whose best known book is A Southern
Garden, was a landscape designer and plantswoman extraordinaire who wrote
specifically for gardeners in what amounts to USDA Zone 7-8 in the
mid-Atlantic/southeastern USA, roughly from Maryland down. Her books are
much
esteemed both here and abroad.
