After I returned from Oregon, it looked as if the two weeks of rainless,
windy, 90-degree weather had aborted all the bloomstalks on my Japanese
irises. But it was not to be--a few nice but short stalks on the old
SUMMER STORM and BANKONO KOE (not sure of the spelling on the latter
variety, but it is a very pretty broken-color double in white and
red-violet) are showing themselves this week. The Alstroemerias and
Asiatic lilies, great companions to JIs, are blooming wildly.
Speaking of lilies, the Chinese trumpet types naturalize in my garden much
more readily than the Asiatics, which are usually recommended for the
purpose. One seed-grown plant with deep orange flowers is now budded at
nearly nine feet tall! Another great one for me is BLACK BEAUTY, which
regularly gets over 6 feet and can have as many as 40 individual blooms.
Getting even more Off Topic here, but has anyone else in Z7 or north tried
wintering over the newer hybrid callas? I have had 3 varieties come
through with flying colors and as such they are much taller and with large
flowers than the same varieties stored over winter and started in pots
before planting out. And gosh-all-mighty, some Scadoxus multiflorus I left
out over winter are up and blooming!
AND we're enjoying a long, long sequence of bloom on the Tiger's Eye Iris,
Trimezia martinicenesis, which I find also proliferates from the
bloomstalk, like Neomarica. This one's strictly a pot-plant here.
