Hi Gloria:
Iris wisdom would have you snap off the stalks rather than cut them. Some
folks report that this is not possible, that the irises won't cooperate, but
it's the preferred method if you can get the technique down. I have found
that if I cut the stalk at about 3 inches above the rhizome, I can get just
the right leverage on the stump to snap it off flush with the rhizome. Bill
Shear can tell us the reasons why this is healthier for the plant (something
about separating between cells or some such - scientifically challanged am I).
We have had NOTHING but rain here in the Buffalo burbs. My backyard flooded
days ago and I swear I heard someone yell "Surf's up!" this morning when the
wind picked up.
Siberians are glorious and the Japanese Irises should be reaching for heaven
this year.
