John,
The banner ads come with messages that are sent in an HTML format (shame and
fie on those who do not use plain text). I've not noticed, but it may
happen with rich text as well, but I haven't had a rich text from any of the
egroups to know if this will happen.

Occasionally messages will show up with a banner ad as well. It has also
been my opinion that I can ignore them easily enough, but I have had
reports that some of the ads cause some systems to redial the connection
to the ISP when someone is working off-line.. I can't say that many have
that problem, but it is a nuisance to some.
At any rate a buck or two from enough folks who would like to do away
with them will solve the problem. It is certainly a low risk
proposition. Purely voluntary. No retribution for anyone who doesn't
contribute, besides I won't even know.
