Dear Wendy. wouldn't mind having some of that cool weather here! I am sure
you will get many replies about space-ages. I can remember when they were
looked down upon as not worthy of serious consideration, but, like rebloomers
have become not just acceptable but the way of life -- space agers are coming
into their own. You know that caterpillar-like beard that is on the falls ---
wellm when that elongates into a thin spike- it's a horn, or if it fluffs out
into a graceful appendage-like acquistion it is a flounce -- there are all
kinds of descriptions when there are attractive appendages at the end of the
beard -- and THEY make an iris a space-ager! I'm sure you will receive
knowledgeable, more scientific explanations but this is just agardener's
idea to hold you over for the other!! They are THE thing right now! As I
said, they were looked down upon by the purists as "novelties" and referred
to scornfully - but I've always liked the unusual and the different.
Now, I'' have to tell you another "shoe" story! When I was a little girl, my
Dad brought home (he had been appraising some land with a stream) the cutest
little turle - about the size of our 50-cent piece. I kept him in a small
mixing bowl with some water and sand, but one day he got out, and my heart
was broken. That night when my mother went to bed and she put her foot in
her bedroom slippers (she would NEVER go to the bathroom barefooted! Very
Victorian was my mother!) well--- there was her scream! In the toe of her
slipper was my poor little lost turtle - he lived many years, and I was VERY
careful that he didn't roam again! What part of Australia are you in?
