Oh, ratsarootie!! That is my pet theory, the horticultural oil as benign
panacea theory.
Ian, which sort of oil did you use and how and would you be inclined to try
it again?
As for the bit about no untility in later spraying, the received wisdom is
that you have to get them in the fan, which means to my unscientific way of
thinking that they are only susceptible at a certain age, or the leaf tissues
convey the poison better, or there is some contact poison aspect to it. But
what do I know.
If you are still finding little ones in the leaves I'd spray for sure. Or
drench. Kathyguest says drench rather than spraying for better control.
I think you should check out that long article the Spoons wrote in the AIS
Bulletin. They are making a good deal of progress in clarifying some issues
of borer behavior and identifying effective less toxic controls.... and a
finer contribution to the iris commonweal it would be harder to imagine.
