Babs, I'll just give my"non-professional" answer to your title of "American"
-- I think the best known "native" iris we have is called the "Louisianas" --
all(?) the others are hybridized from what came from Europe and Asia -- I'm
sure someone more knowledgeable will expand on that subject. BUT I will
answer your "P.S." question: there are numerous other members on your side
of the Atlantic: England, Switzerland, Italy, Germany,Sweden, are the
countries that come to mind without looking it up (and of course France which
has been mentioned) Those I know because they belong to the Reblooming Iris
Society which is a Section of the American Iris Society, and I am the
Immediate Past President of the rebloomers. Right now I should ask you to
think about joining - they don't just bloom in the Spring, but again after
they recover and will bloom until frost. So think about getting some of
those to add to the medians I suggested. The one iris you have has such huge
flowers the stalks can't support them - that is why I don't have it any more
- it just seemed gross(IMHO -that means In My Humble Opinion - a bunch of
letters frequently used here in email)
