When we moved 3 years ago, I just potted up pieces of all my irises (and
daylilies)  into 8" black plastic bag-pots with red Salisbury clay. They
then sat on the lawn in full sun all summer and all survived. I watered them
about twice a week. I think the biggest adjusment for them was being planted
out into pH6 sandy loam, after the alkaline clay.
